Mark Abel Named Delos Co-Director

Many congratulations to Mark Abel, a longtime client and collaborator, for becoming the co-director of Delos. The Delos record label is one of the last and greatest classical music labels, and I have supported Mark with sheet music prep and orchestrations on five Delos releases to date. The releases have gone so well he’s not just a recording artist any more, he’s helping to run the label! Mark willfully entered the contemporary classical music world relatively late in life, after ending a long career as a journalist and changing directions. His determination, focus, and self-education are significant, and the fruits of his labor are clearly showing. In addition to co-directing Delos with Carol Rosenberger we are also working on the …

Mark Abel – Time And Distance album release

My fifth album collaboration with composer Mark Abel came out today on the Delos label. Time and Distance is a wide-ranging collection of classical art song that features Grammy-winning soprano Hila Plitmann and Southern California mezzo Janelle DeStefano. Mark’s provocative and original style blends elements of classical, rock and jazz in a unique musical fusion that combines the depth and sophistication of classical with the direct impact of rock. I did the music preparation for the album.

Another Mark Abel song cycle

Mark Abel has just completed yet another song cycle, for which I was again his music copyist. Entitled “In The Rear View Mirror, Now” they illustrate again how very unique Mark’s artistic voice is. I have worked with him since 2010, and it’s always a pleasure.

Recording a new opera

I was orchestrator and co-producer for a new Opera by composer Mark Abel. We had an all-star cast of musicians and the album will be released on the Delos label in 2016. It was a deep collaboration between Mark and I which lasted about a year, and it was a real pleasure to work on. The session was conducted by Benjamin Makino and the musicians were contracted by Timothy Loo.

Dream Gallery Physical Release

The physical release of Dream Gallery is today, and the album is still on sale for HALF PRICE through iTunes for the rest of this month. Buy it before the price doubles! It’s 70 minutes of classical/rock full orchestra art songs, nothing like anything you have in your collection. Check it out on iTunes, Amazon, our label Delos, Arkiv Music, Classics Online, or a store near you. Another nice album review by John J. Puccio is available on Classical Candor.

The Dream Gallery release announced

I’m very pleased to announce the March 6 release by the Delos label of “The Dream Gallery: Seven California Portraits”, a massive song cycle for solo singers and full orchestra that depicts a group of archetypal Californians and the regions in which they live. My first major label release, I co-produced the album and co-orchestrated the music with composer Mark Abel. I also played the piano throughout and we did some of the smaller recording sessions in my Torrance studio. Sharon Lavery, one of the Los Angeles area’s leading conductors, directed an ensemble of distinguished Hollywood session players. The product of an intense year-and-a-half of composing and recording, Dream Gallery exposes both the state’s varied landscape and the fault lines of …

Dream Gallery piano arrangements

Dream Gallery is the title of a modern classical album that I produced and orchestrated with composer Mark Abel. It is a song cycle for full orchestra and soloists and will be released soon by Delos, one of the most respected and well established classical labels. I am currently arranging the entire 70 minute work for solo piano, and these arrangements will be released as sheet music at the same time.
